Boat Parade

FOURTH ANNUAL QUEEN LAKE BOAT PARADE

JULY 4, 2010

The boat parade was held this year on Sunday, July 4th at 2 p.m. with a little shower before but warm weather following. There were a total of 9 entries, broken out into two classes this year to equal out the competition - 5 pontoon boats and 4 power boats.

Everyone seemed to be enthused and excited with a lot of work going into the preparation of the boats. As in past years, each participant received a certificate of entry.

The parade circled by the judges twice to give them more time to evaluate all the entrants. I know it must have been a hard job judging this year as there were so many really great entries and the end scoring was very close.

The judges this year were Bob Clark and Marilyn Burday of Spa Road, Richard Stevens, Chief of the Phillipston Fire Department, Paula Haley of Templeton, and Ruth French of Altman Drive. There were 3 classifications that the participants were marked on – Boat Decoration (related to theme, creativity, extensiveness, etc.), Costumes (design, creativity, related to theme, etc.), and Special Effects (sounds, actions, originality, etc.) the same as last year.

All participants did a great job and I'm sure had lots of fun working together to put together their entry. Residents of the lake cheered them on as well as a large number of people on the public beach.

Thank you to all who participated.

Monthly Articles About

Our Beautiful Queen Lake in Phillipston

by Queen Lake Assoc. Board of Directors, Claire Adomaitis

Article IX

Summer has been in full swing for the month of July with many people enjoying the Public Beach and Boat Ramp.  Children’s laughter and squealing can be heard!  Sand castles are being built with motes around them.

This happiness and joy continued until around July 15th the Board of Health posted beach closings on the North and South ends of Queen Lake .  Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the Board of Health is required to test the beaches for e-coli bacteria and when it reaches a certain level they must close the beaches.

E. coli lives in human and animal intestines.  E.Coli thrives in warm, wet, dark places that are rich in nutrients, such as human and animal intestinal tracts.  Once excreted by humans, beaver, geese and dogs, the bacteria cannot survive the harsh conditions of the outside world; however, some manage to find their way into lakes and streams.  Once in water or sediment, E. Coli can persist for several weeks.  Current research suggests that E. coli can survive, grow and persist in moist beach sand.

In order for us to help keep Queen Lake clear and beautiful so we can swim and enjoy it, we must take some common sense measures.  You may have noticed the new signs posted on the beach, “No Dogs”.  As beachgoers it is a must to make sure children have bathroom breaks frequently and make use of the Porta-Pottie that is being supplied for your use by the town of Phillipston .  We also need to control our use of fertilizers and reduce the use of pesticides as storm runoff can be polluted by all these things.  We need to be aware of our surroundings, cleaning up after ourselves and others if need be.

Here’s hoping that the signs will soon be taken down and swimming and fun can be enjoyed once more at “Our Queen Lake”.  Let’s be more conscientious of all that we can do to keep our beach and lake safe!

The public beach on the south end of the lake is open for swimming. The beach is open to Phillipston residents only.
